One of the fifty daughters of Danaus — when Argos lacked water she met Poseidon at the springs he revealed, and by him became mother of Nauplius, founder of Nauplia on the Argive coast.1
When Poseidon had dried up the springs of Argos in anger at Inachus, Danaus sent his daughters to find water. Amymone, searching with a dart, roused a sleeping satyr who would have forced her; Poseidon appeared, the satyr fled, and she lay with the god, who showed her the springs that still bear her name.2
Pausanias says Nauplia was founded by Nauplius, reputed son of Poseidon and Amymone — the port with Poseidon's sanctuary, harbours, and the spring Canathus where the Argives say Hera bathes each year.3
